Investigation Overview
In May 2020, an investigation into automated YouTube spam activity revealed a network of bot accounts operating under the moniker "Bananarama." Many of these accounts stemmed from older profiles—some created as early as 2008—repurposed with identical channel names and logos to bypass basic spam detection algorithms.
The primary strategy of this bot network involves targeting premiere live-stream broadcasts worldwide to deliver automated comments, attempt account growth scams, and promote questionable external links.
Common Spam Comment Patterns
Channels targeted by this network typically see recurring comments containing variations of the following phrases:
- "Loved it"
- "Let’s be YouTube partners"
- "Don’t stop"
- "Investment in your channel"
- "Want to become friends?"
- Links leading to adult websites, phishing gateways, or cryptocurrency schemes.
How the Bot Operates & Keyword Triggers
These automated bots actively crawl YouTube looking for specific video tags and titles—particularly keywords like "free", "gaming", or "live". Once a video is posted with these tags, the spam bot automatically targets the comment section.
